The 808 Urban Junior Board Initiative (JBI) is committed to fostering the development of youth leaders as community muralists, grassroots community organizers and social entrepreneurs. By building youth governing boards of community artists throughout high schools across Hawaii, 808 Urban works toward uplifting the voices of our juniors as leaders, educators, and role models in their communities. To cultivate ‘community artists’, 808 Urban incorporates critical thinking tactics that address local and global issues through comprehensive training curriculums and ongoing mentorships. By producing youth-led community events and mural projects, 808 Urban provides hands-on experience in grassroots organizing and responsible, creative expression. Our ultimate goal is to inspire our junior leaders to mobilize and govern action toward improving the quality of life within their own communities. Using art as the platform, the Junior Board Initiative develops Hawai’i’s youth into leaders, and leaders into contributing members of society.
