Presenting the HI-story Urban Arts Festival

(Scroll down for the full schedule of activities)

808 Urban’s “HI-story” Urban Arts Festival focuses on bringing positive, creative outlets for Hawai’i’s youth in an engaging way that meets their interests in the urban arts. Together, through a collaboration of art, music, education, and sustainability focused performances and workshops, this festival showcases the creativity of Hawai’i’s diverse culture from traditional to urban.

With a stage hosted by Jason Mateo, DJ’s, Emcees, BBoy Dance Crews, a Freestyle Lyricist’s Station, Art, Culture, Sustainability Workshops and more- there will be plenty of activities and entertainment for all ages.  Live performances by Irie Love, Diverse Art Center, 808 Breakers, Pana Jones, Million Billion and Kreative Dwella with DJ Memwar,  Super Groupers and DJ Cozy will run throughout the day.  Participating partner organizations include: Pacific Tongues, Na Mea/Native Books Hawai’i, Hui Aloha ‘Aina Momona, Hawai’i Women in Filmmaking, FOB Project, Hawaii Hands in Helping Out and Sustainable Coastlines.

The main event will showcase the talents of over 40 high school youth from over 10 different schools from 808 Urban’s Junior Board Art Teams and Pacific Tongue’s Youth Poets in a mural and spoken word battle based around the collaborative youth-led campaign “Healthy Land, Healthy Bodies, Healthy Relationships”.  Visual elements include a Blackbook Battle hosted by artist, ESCAPE, and live painting by some of Hawai’i’s most well known graffiti and aerosol artists.  Cultural workshops including poi pounding, lei making and printing.   Educational activities like Hawai’i Women in Filmmaking’s Flipbook and Clay Animation Workshop will be stimulating and creative.

The intent of 808 Urban and collaborative partners is to showcase to the public the transformational power of art and the ways in which community can support creative outlets for our young people through positive messaging and engaging cultural and urban art activities.

**Any children and youth artists wanting to participate in the Blackbook Battle will need to bring their blackbooks/sketchbooks and their own markers.  Sign up will start at 10am.  All ages are encouraged to join.
